Chairman of the Edo State Football Association, Fred Newton Erhunmwunse, has thumbed his chest to say that the recently organized Asue Unity Gold Cup tournament for Senatorial Districts in the state met up with his plan to boost grassroots football in the state.
He made the assertion while answering reporters inquiries on the outcome of the less than one week tournament held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin.
“It is the first tournament been hosted by the Edo FA. We just came onboard barely a month ago. It is just like a test run of what we can do come next year.
“We want to give kudos to the sponsor(Dr. Asue Ighodalo, PDP governorship aspirant) for believing in us and for donating the trophy for the three senatorial districts to compete for.
“Yes, the two teams(Edo South and Edo Central Senatorial Districts) played to their strength. It is just that in penalties shootout the better side always wins. I hope to give kudos to the Edo Central Team. They came in today(match day) and fatigue affected them.
“You don’t travel on a match day, play a match and travel back to your base same day. I want to give them kudos. It was a fairly contested game for both sides. Kudos to the goalkeeper (of Edo South) who eventually won the Man of the Tournament.”
He gave thumbs up to all the members of the FA board for the extra effort they put into ensuring that the board’s first outing turned out a huge success.
On the Asue Unity Gold Cup, Erhunmwunse promised that it is going to be an annual event but would henceforth be organized in the middle of the year (to avoid the tension that would pop up if it is held at year’s end.)
“We are also looking at organizing some more tournaments next year. Our calendar is full. We have a lot to give to Edo people. That’s what we promised when we were campaigning to be elected into office.”
