Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged new education secretaries for Local Government Areas (LGAs) to help the government in sustaining the advances made in the state’s basic education sector.

The governor gave the charge at the closing ceremony of onboarding and two weeks training for Education Secretaries and Managers, organised by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

Obaseki said the government would fire any of the local government education Secretaries who fails to meet up with the assigned task of tracking the progress of pupils in their localities.

He noted: “We have gone through a diligent process in hiring you but will fire you if you do not achieve the set goals. We are going to invest in you; we have started doing that already. We are going to continue to train you.

“This is just a first in a series; it will be a continuous training, learning and development process. But we are going to have a very strict assessment system.”

Obaseki further stated: “If we see children in your local government are not coping, we are going to drop you. The assessment will be done on an annual basis. It will be transparent because no godfather gave you this job; it is your talent that gave it to you.

“You got this job on your own merit, so you must go back there and do the work,” he charged.

Obaseki said that he was proud of SUBEB achievements in the state, noting that the recruitment of new education managers was a step to replicate the success at the local government level.

Earlier, the Chairman of SUBEB in Edo, Dr Joan Oviawe, thanked the governor for his immense support in reenacting basic education in the state.

Oviawe said: “You have not only given us the assignment, but you have also given us the tools to do the work. For this, we are eternally grateful.”
