Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor, Director of Contact and Mobilisation of the Labour Party(LP) in the diaspora, has queried the rationale behind what he termed the coalition between some key officials of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) in Edo State.
He alleged that as a result of this relationship the NBA officials have often exhibited partisanship on issues that relate to political parties in the state.
He stated: “It is quite commendable for the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA), Nosa Edo-Osagie to hold a joint conference with elements of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), led by One Rev Olu Martins, who is facing trial in court over his threat to beat up opposition elements and destroy their billboards.
“It is very funny that Edo-Osagie did not condemn the killing of a policeman at the Benin Airport. He did not condemn the actions of Olu Martins that they will beat up the opposition. The NBA Benin branch under Nosa Edo-Osagie is like an agency of Edo State Government House.
“The Branch Chairman, Nosa Edo-Osagie is an official of the Edo State Government. He is a member of the Edo State Private Property Protection Committee and the Edo State Public Procurement Agency. We do not expect anything different from him, as he is a member of the PDP Government.
“We also know that he is a card carrying member of the PDP. It is evident therefore that what happened at the NBA Bar House was a meeting of PDP members in Edo State and not the NBA, which is known for protecting the rule of law.”
Going further, he disclosed that “the Edo State Government has refused to swear in three Judges, who have been recommended for appointed for appointment by the National Judicial Council(NJC) and the NBA Benin Branch has said nothing against the impunity of Edo State Government. Instead the NBA Benin Branch is now the legal arm of the PDP government in Edo State.”
