The clamour for the zoning of the Presidency to the southern region of Nigeria in 2023 has received a knock from civil rights activist and President of the One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor.

In a chat, the Nigerian Canadian said that he doesn’t believe in the idea of zoning because quota system which is fashioned like zoning has been promoting mediocrity.

“The reason that we are where we are today is qouta system. It has never worked for us. That’s why I don’t believe in it.

“For instance, what is important to the citizens of Canada is good governance. That there is an enabling environment; that there is social welfare for the citizens; that there is a good police force. The minimum payment for a police constable in Canada is 100,000 Canadian dollars plus house etc.

“If you’re not working there is an unemployment benefit. If you are retired there is a retirement benefit. That’s what it should be in politics. If you’re crying foul that the Presidency should be ceded to the south I will tell you that I don’t want to be politically correct. I am not for it.”

Going further, he stated that “what we should concentrate on is to kill corruption; reduce the money we spend in keeping these national ‘legislooters’ and members of the states houses of assembly who don’t do anything or look into ghostworkers and fictitious contracts given out. That’s my concern. I don’t believe in turn by turn. I believe in merit.”

On his desire to contest for councillorship position in Utoka, a community in Ovia North East Local Government Council of Edo State, as an independent candidate, Eholor said his coming is to impact positively on his constituents and make politics unattractive to “merchants of mysteries.”
