Journalists from South-South encouraged to shape migration perception

Stakeholders at a two day capacity building workshop for media agencies organised by the civil society network on migration and development CSOnetMADE and the European Union (EU) have encouraged journalists from the south south region to contribute and shape the public, political perception on all aspect of life which includes migration.

In her opening remark the Senior Project Officer in International Organisations for Migration (IOM), Dr. Ogun Adebanke, said the reason for the training is to broaden the knowledge of Nigeria media agencies on migration in framing migration reports to positively influence and impact policies and implementations.

Dr. Adebanke tasked media agencies to be objective in their reportage. The programme Director and resource person, Mr. Osita Osemene, said in a lecture titled Migration and the Media the inability of conventional media agencies to balance reports on migration has portrayed migration as irregular.

In another lecture titled Migration trends and dynamics the programme coordinator, Dr. Emeka Obiezu, tasked media agencies to always ensure proper investigations with accurate data and information before dissemination. 

Participants drawn from the south south states of Nigeria  appreciated the organisers for the two day capacity building workshop on migration. 

Also present was the chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State, Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan, who reiterated the importance of training and retraining for media agencies and journalists across the south-south, Nigeria.
