UNIBEN set to commence occupational therapy, speech/audiology programmes as Amu leads advocacy visit

Alumni play a key role in any institution’s development, says Prof. Ize-Iyamu

On Thursday, October 5th, the Akin Deko Hall of the University of Benin (Uniben), Ugbowo Campus, came alive as Professor Kingsley Akhigbe,
a mental health specialist, delivered an inaugural lecture titled “Kolomental and the Elephant in the Room – Our Mental Health.” under the distinguished Chairmanship of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami.

The thought-provoking and educational presentation addressed crucial concerns related to mental health. The lecture illuminated several key points he delved into the concept of “Kolomental,” shedding light on individuals coping with severe mental health issues. Through art and poetry, he provided profound insights into their experiences, fostering empathy and understanding.

Beyond “Kolomental,” the lecture unveiled often unnoticed, non-psychotic psychiatric illnesses affecting individuals across society. These challenges frequently go undiagnosed and untreated, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support.

Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health was a central theme. Professor Akhigbe called for open dialogue, understanding, and compassion to combat the barriers preventing individuals from seeking help.

Practical insights were offered into recognizing warning signs of various mental health issues, including stress, substance abuse, bullying, and more. Early intervention and support were underscored as crucial.

Evidence-based approaches to improving mental health outcomes were presented, emphasizing the significance of research in advancing the field.

Professor Akhigbe’s dedication to mental health advocacy, demonstrated by his membership in the World Federation for Mental Health, permeated the lecture. He emphasized the role of individuals, communities, and institutions in promoting mental well-being.

This inaugural lecture served as a call to action, urging attendees and the broader community to engage in conversations that can transform lives. Professor Akhigbe’s commitment to mental health awareness and advocacy continues to inspire positive change.
