UNIBEN set to commence occupational therapy, speech/audiology programmes as Amu leads advocacy visit

In continuation of her commitment to expanding access to University training in Occupational Therapy and Speech/Audiology across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Dr. Victoria Amu led a delegation to the University of Benin (UNIBEN). During the strategic visit, her team met with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie (SAN) and other principal officers of the university to discuss modalities for establishing the programmes within the institution.

Expressing his delight over the initiative, the Vice Chancellor commended Dr. Amu’s advocacy efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare education system.

He assured all that the University of Benin is fully ready to commence the Occupational Therapy and Speech/Audiology programmes in the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Vice Chancellor further emphasised that the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Prof. Victor ‘Ogie Igbineweka would lead this team and work closely with the Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board and National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure that all regulatory requirements are duly met for a smooth takeoff.

In her remarks, Dr. Victoria Amu expressed deep appreciation to the Vice Chancellor and the management team for their enthusiasm and readiness to support the vision. She reaffirmed her team’s commitment to providing the necessary technical and professional guidance to ensure successful programme implementation.

According to her, the introduction of these disciplines will not only create academic opportunities but also strengthen the nation’s capacity in rehabilitative healthcare delivery.

Also present at the meeting were notable professionals, including Prof. Ahmed Rufai, Registrar of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board who assured the Vice Chancellor of the Board support during Programme accreditation; Mrs. Omodaranle Deborah Oluwatoyin, Assistant Director and Speech and Language Therapist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH); Mr. Oluwasegun Ayeni, Acting Head of Department, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State; and Mr. Adediji Adeolu, Head of Department, University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
