Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) has urged travelers passing through Benin City, the Edo State capital to make use of the Benin by-pass and avoid transiting through the city centre so as to ensure free flow of traffic and not congest major roads in the city.
The Managing Director, EDSTMA, Dennis Ade Olorigbe, who made the submission, said the state government is committed to ensure the safety and security of Edo people, as well as seamless traffic during the yuletide period.
According to him, “The yuletide season is a time when there is increased human and vehicular traffic around the city. But, at EDSTMA, we are committed to ensuring that the city centre is not clogged during this period.
“Edo State is a logistic hub that witnesses a lot of activity during this period as a result of people traversing the state to the North, East and other parts of the country. As they travel through Benin City, the state capital, we urge them to make use of the bypass at Oluku and Eyaen, so as not to clog the city centre.
“Also, for residents, we advise that they should only move around to get essential supplies so as to reduce the human and vehicular traffic on the streets and major roads, especially in the light of the security situation in the country,” he said.
He continued: “Going into the New Year ‘driving against traffic’ offences otherwise referred to as ‘One Way’ would attract a maximum penalty.
“Apprehended vehicles as per the above offence will be kept in the custody of the Agency till next year as an additional punitive measure, to act as a deterrent to would-be offenders. These far-reaching decisions have become imperative owing to the anticipated high volume of vehicular traffic expected during the yuletide celebrations.
“This would help mitigate the incident and incidence of accidents related damages on our roads whilst in the same breadth helping to ensure the safety of life and property, going into the New Year.”
