Igueben, the administrative headquarters of Igueben Local Government Council of Edo State, is presently on the front burner of news around the world.
The abduction of 31 people by the ‘evil doers’ as the state government would want to describe the abductors is a talk around town. Worthy of mention about the crime is the fact that the locality is in the vicinity of Edo Central Senatorial District where a few months back a show of military might was exhibited with the launch of Atanakpa, a local security team, to which millions of naira was contributed and some operational vehicles were also added for smooth operation.
But the way the Igueben abduction/kidnap story is going the Atanakpa has failed in totality as it has not been mentioned anywhere the role that the outfit played in checkmating the excesses of the criminal elements.
That apart the day after the crime was committed, the state Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, was heard talking about the tightness and swiftness of the operation of its local security network.
What happened next put a lie to Nehikhare’s claim as a topshot of the state customary court and another victim, a former lawmaker in the state were abducted without a single challenge.
Another question that residents of the state are asking is the whereabout of the Wabaizigan, a security outfit made up of security operatives from the different arms of the security agencies.
What is more confusing about the whole issue is that nobody is even talking about the drones that Governor Godwin Obaseki said so much about their effectiveness not too long ago. Are the drones now out of service?
