The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended its plenary sitting scheduled for Tuesday following a security breach discovered within the hallowed chambers.
In the early hours of Tuesday, staff of the Assembly noticed a bullet hole in the ceiling of the chamber, with a bullet reportedly found lodged on a table inside the hall.
Addressing journalists, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Jonathan Ibhamawu, confirmed the development and stated that relevant security agencies have been invited to investigate the incident.
“Our attention was drawn to the incident, and I immediately contacted the Commissioner of Police (CP) and invited the Department of State Services (DSS). The matter has been handed over to them to determine what led to the occurrence,” he said.
Hon. Ibhamawu assured members of the public that no lawmaker or staff member was injured, noting that all legislators were present for the day’s sitting before the decision was taken to suspend plenary.
“Everyone is safe. However, we have decided to suspend today’s sitting to allow security agencies to thoroughly comb the chambers and carry out a proper investigation,” he added.
He further disclosed that security operatives, including experts, are currently on ground and that a detailed report will be made available upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Majority Leader addressed the press in the company of the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Osawonyi Atu, and other members of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly.
