Senator Mathew Urhoghide, the immediate past representative of Edo South in the red chambers of the National Assembly, has reiterated that the chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win the 2024 governorship poll in the state is not about tribe.
He was speaking to reporters on the sideline of a training programme in Agro Forestry and Agro business by the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria(FRIN) which he initiated for a hundred youths resident in his constituency.
Addressing the participants at the training programme he stated: “I have been carrying out this programme since I was elected in 2015 for our people in Edo South Senatorial District. As long as you are resident in Edo South whether you voted for me in 2015 or not. I have been training everybody.
“I made the promise before my election because I know that there is power in knowledge. There is no knowledge tool that’s lost. Moreso, at this time when we have millions of graduates. Every year over two million are coming out. Government whether local, state or federal, that’s the highest employer of labour, cannot employ all the people.
“So, the people, whether you’re educated or not you must learn something that can make you to survive and put food on your table. I decided to teach people different things and I went ahead to meet all federal agencies. The one that you have here today, the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), are in Ibadan.”
He charged the participants to pay deep attention to what they will be taught so that they can deploy the knowledge they gain to advantage in years to come.
According to him, he decided to keep to his promise even when he is no longer in the Senate so that poverty and want can be expunged from the streets.
Giving an update of the number of people who have benefitted from such training programmes that he initiated in his eight years tenure in the Senate the Senator said the figure add up to 7423 people with some of the beneficiaries now living a life of abundance as they put their newly acquired skills into use.
Answering reporters questions later Senator Urhoghide said the issue of zoning his party, the APC, gubernatorial ticket, in 2024 is entirely up to the party.
“That’s not within my realm. I don’t control that. I have talked about this matter before. It is entirely up to the party. The party too has to strategize. All that’s expected for the party to win the election for me is not about tribe.”
