Since he announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) some days ago, Benjamin Igbinovia Obaseki, an ex-officio of the party in Oredo Local Government Area, who is a relative of Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has been inundated with strange calls asking that he rescind his decision.
However, he has stuck to his gun saying that he is a harbinger of more defectors by the larger Obaseki family in a couple of days time.
He said: “I see that with the way that my brother, Governor Godwin Obaseki, is going that things will not go well. Also seeing the way that he is destroying our family name I don’t feel secured to remain in PDP with him.
“I don’t have issues with the party. Rather, my concern is my brother’s behaviour. The governor is not doing well. Its forbidden in Benin. We don’t fight the Oba. In our family we respect our seniors. The way the man is going now the thing will not go well. I know the Benins will listen to the Oba.
“You cannot come from our family and destroy the palace. We will not support you. We, the Obasekis, are not in support of this man(Governor Obaseki).
“In a few weeks from now you will see close to 300 members of the Obaseki family joining me in defecting from the PDP. We are joining the APC. His character is telling me to leave the party because I cannot stay in the PDP watching my brother fighting the palace.
“It is an abomination. I cannot eat from that curse. If he resolves with the palace I will go back to the PDP. I know that my brother cannot resolve with the palace. He has a very strong mind. Just last month we held a family meeting where we all decided to pull out of the PDP with an order that I should lead the pack by quitting first while the others join me later.
“I cannot deny my elder brother because of politics. He remains my brother. The problem he has is that he doesnt listen to advice. He does whatever he feels is okay by him. I respect the palace and tradition so I dont want to be caught doing things contrary to my belief.”
