A call for authentic faith and accountability in religious leadership

Chief (Dr.)Patrick Osagie Eholor critique of Pastor Jeremiah’s practices is a timely reminder of the need for transparency, authenticity, and adherence to biblical principles within Christian leadership. Selling items like “miracle soap,” “miracle water,” and claiming to possess the stone David used in killing Goliath, appears to be exploiting vulnerable individuals seeking spiritual guidance and comfort. Such practices run counter to the teachings of Jesus Christ, who never sold anything in order to perform miracles or offer healing.

In Matthew 10:8, Jesus instructs his disciples, “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.”

Similarly, in Matthew 21:12-13, Jesus demonstrates his disdain for commercial activities within the temple, overturning the tables of money changers and saying, “My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) must break its silence on these issues and address the questionable practices of some “men of God.” By failing to speak out against such behavior, CAN risks enabling the perpetuation of spiritual manipulation and the undermining of genuine faith.

Furthermore, it is high time for the Federal Government to consider implementing policies that hold churches and their leaders accountable for their actions. These policies may include taxes on the sale of items like “miracle water” and other commercial products, ensuring that churches contribute to the nation’s economy rather than solely profiting from their followers.

Finally, let us remember Jesus’ example of paying taxes in Matthew 17:24-27, where he instructs Peter to pay the temple tax, saying, “So that we may not offend them, go to the sea, and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take it and give it to them for me and for you.” In this instance, Jesus demonstrates his respect for the laws of the land while also providing for those in need.

As Christians and responsible citizens, we must strive for authenticity and accountability within religious leadership, ensuring that the teachings of Jesus Christ remain at the forefront of our faith and practice.
