Workshop acknowledge labour migration reporters knowledge and skills

A two-day national consultation and training workshop on International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) adapted Media Toolkit for reporting forced labour and fair recruitment in Nigeria, which held in Benin City, has acknowleged the knowledge acquired and skills exhibited by media practitioners in the course of doing their work.

On knowledge in labour migration reporting, participants agreed that “there is so much awareness on the part of journalists reporting on labour migration. Over time this knowledge was acquired from trainings, seminars, workshops and conferences both physical and virtual that they have attended.”

Participants were, among others, of the opinion that “journalists reporting on labour migration to a large extent acquired relevant skill sets as ability to communicate, establish relevant and significant network of contacts.”

On Community practice on Fairway reporting, participants called for setting up of social media network platforms through which there should be regular dissemination of information among members, capacity building, networking to have access to grants for research work and publication of findings in local and international journals.

Participants talked about the gains of migration, saying that there is nothing wrong about migration but that it must be done in line with the laws guiding it.

Resource persons at the workshop included Dr. Chris Emeka, Tunde Salman and Austin Erameh, National Project Coordinator, FAIRWAY Programme – Nigeria.
