NAWOJ condemns assault on female journalist in Edo, demands immediate action

Outgoing Edo NAWOJ Chairman gets national appointment

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Edo State chapter, has commemorated the International Women’s Day with the Theme: “DigitALL: Innovation And Technology For Gender Equality.”

Addressing members of the Association at NUJ Conference Hall in Benin City, Princess Habiibah Oyarekhua, called on women journalists to keep upgrading their academic qualifications for future opportunities. She stressed that women journalists should be more technology savvy to function effectively in the journalism profession.

“Women are more intelligent and if you all develop your digital intelligence and sustain it, I tell you, women in no time will overtake Men. Women are more smart and if given opportunity to deliver on deadline, women deliver on deadline and they are more honest than men.”

According to her, women journalists can achieve so much results with their Android phones if they understand the features of their phones.

Talking on gender equality, she commended working class women who despite the challenge of their works still keep up with the home front. She however charged women journalists to use their various media houses to sensitize the public against women inequality in office places and elective positions.

“There must be a major paradigm shift. Men are the heads of women but can the head stand without the neck? Women are meant to love and obey their husbands in the home but in office places, a man must not earn more than a woman because he is a man, rather it should be based on qualifications and experience.”

Speaking also, Comrade Blessing Eromo condemned women who remain silent in the face of domestic violence. She called on women who are molested by men to speak up as there are agencies who are in charge of handling domestic violence issues.

Speaking on Criminal Justice, Comrade Blessing Eromo acknowledge the importance of media in enlightening the public on available access to Justice. According to Comrade Blessing, media professionals are to be equiped with ACJA provisions on Criminal Justice to enable them educate the public adequately.

She further called on women journalists to develop the act of writing features on issues relating to Criminal Justice to enable the people be in tune with the demands of the law.

Speaking earlier, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan, commended women journalists for their commitment to the growth of the Association. She noted that her leadership will continue to provide the necessary training that would help improve the capacity of women journalists in the state.

She however called on those who are yet to benefit from the training organized so far to take advantage of future training to enhance their individual growths.
