Two Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ikeja zone are in trouble as a gay suspect escaped from their custody.

The head of police patrol team in Ikeja axis of Lagos made this known recently during a chat with newsmen while on patrol duty.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Josiah Inyang alleged that a suspected gay, Ehikwe Nkem Maurice was arrested and detained in Ikeja Police Division but later escaped due to negligence of the officers on duty then in the station.

He noted, “the gay suspect was arrested and detained in our division but he escaped later due to negligence of our officers on duty. As l speak now, the two officers, Sergeants Kate and Amaka who were on duty when the suspect escaped are already put in detention. Both of them will be made to face a panel of senior officers for interrogations in due course and if found guilty, they might lose their job”.

Officer Inyang further revealed they have made several efforts to track the 37 years gay suspect, Maurice to his residence at 25, Akinwunmi Street in Ejigbo Quarters in Lagos but all to no avail.

He also hinted that surveillance has been directed to Ika North East, the suspect’s native community in Delta State as part of efforts to get him arrested as quickly as possible.

According to him, “we are on top of the situation. All hands are on deck to arrest Maurice. We have also extended our search to his community in Delta State. I am very sure it won’t be long, we shall get him.”

Stressing that gay practice is a great offence, SP Inyang said, “since former President Goodluck Jonathan signed the anti same-sex bill in 2014, homosexuality has been criminalised in Nigeria. So, Maurice cannot go scott free, he must be arrested to come and answer to the allegation against him that he practices gay.”

The Officer used the opportunity to enjoin the public to help with information that could lead to the arrest of Maurice.
