Wednesday, January 17th, the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Edo State situated along the Airport Road in Benin City starting from as early as 7am was a beehive of activities as the place was getting set for the formal declaration of the gubernatorial aspiration of Barrister Asue Ighodalo who is aiming to succeed the incumbent governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki by 12th November.
In no time the venue started getting filled with PDP faithfuls from across the 18 local government areas of the acclaimed heartbeat state and others among whom are those who had come to satisfy their curiousity to really get to see the acclaimed anointed candidate of Governor Obaseki at close quarters; workers in the employ of the state government who were given the marching orders to be present at the occasion; rented crowd of market women/men, artisans and political thugs masquerading as commercial transporters unions.
If anybody was in doubt of Governor Obaseki’s endorsement of the erstwhile Sterling Bank Chairman the doubt is left on tatters as the large presence of the state government apparatchiks at the place was enough evidence to finally put the doubt at rest.
The event slated to commence by 9am formally kicked off by after 11am. The traffic situation at the ever busy axis of the Airport Road where the PDP state secretariat is was further compounded as the road became so logjammed that many had to park their cars in adjoining streets and make a quick dash to other parts of the metropolis by trekking the distance.
What was so shocking was that not minding the scenario described above not a single individual from the corporate world which the ‘technocrat’ Barrister Ighodalo claim to be part of was recorded to be present at the event or even send any formal notice of their support for him.
The question flying around since then is, does this absence of Asue’s friends in the corporate world from his formal governorship declaration a sign that they have ditched him?
In the absence of high networth individuals at the programme, the political thugs took centre stage as their cheer leaders coerced them into ‘wabone'(clap for him) even as they could not comprehend his presentation.
