The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Edo State Chapter, has given a thumbs up to the state government for its sustained commitment to sports development, continued investment in sports infrastructure, and the creation of opportunities for athletes, stakeholders, and the broader sports community.

The members applauded the government’s efforts in strengthening the state’s sporting
landscape.

These formed part of the communique it issued at the end of its emergency Congress held inside the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Media Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Going further, the Congress expressed full confidence in the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, acknowledging his commitment to restoring Edo State to its rightful prominence in Nigerian sports.

Similarly, Congress reaffirmed its confidence in the Chairman of SWAN, Edo State Chapter, Comrade Kehinde Osagiede, praising his progressive and exemplary leadership.

Members emphasised that no individual or group will be allowed to undermine his authority or the Association’s integrity, particularly in matters relating to sports coverage in the state.

SWAN commended Senator Neda Imasuen for his sustained investment in grassroots sports development in the state and encouraged him to continue his laudable efforts.

On the state’s representatives in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Bendel Insurance FC, Congress noted with concern the recent dip in performance by the Football Club. Members urged the club to intensify efforts and improve its standing in the league.

Congress expressed confidence that with renewed commitment and improved performance, Bendel Insurance FC can attain a position befitting its rich history and pedigree.

Similarly, the Congress registered confidence in Edo Queens Football Club of Benin ahead of the 2025/2026 NWFL Premier Season opener against Bayelsa Queens on Wednesday evening in Yenagoa.

Following interventions by the Edo State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) ably led by Comrade Festus Alenkhe; Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Desmond Enabulele; the Edo Football Association (EFA) Chairman, Comrade Fred Newton Erhunmwunse and leaders of the Association, Congress resolved to delegate a 10-man team to meet with the sponsor of the Benin Unity Cup, Senator Neda Imasuen, to address outstanding issues between the organisers and SWAN.

Congress noted that this intervention became necessary due to persistent acts of disrespect from the tournament organisers, as formally raised by the Association.

The delegation is directed to report the outcome of the meeting to Congress on or before Thursday, November 27, 2025, to enable SWAN determine its next line of action regarding its participation in the competition.

Meanwhile, Congress condemned the repeated acts of disrespect and unbecoming behaviour exhibited by one Mr. Moshood Karim towards the SWAN Chairman. Accordingly, Congress resolved that Mr. Karim is barred from all SWAN activities henceforth.

Congress reiterated that Mr. Moshood Karim (Uptown Press), is not a member of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). The public, corporate bodies, and all sports stakeholders were advised not to engage or transact with him on behalf of SWAN, Edo State Chapter, or any of its members.

In conclusion, Congress urged all members to remain united, uphold the highest standards of professionalism, and continue to discharge their duties with integrity in the collective interest of sports journalism and sports development in the State.
