The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, has affirmed that “sports development cannot be left to the government alone.”

He made the assertion while commending Dr. Uyi Akpata, President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation(NCF) and Chairman of the Edo State Cricket Association, for his steadfast dedication to sports development in Nigeria.

Enabulele expressed appreciation to Dr. Akpata for fulfilling his promise to reward outstanding performances by cricket teams. He specifically highlighted the recent cash gifts given to Team Edo athletes, who emerged as the best male and female cricket teams at the 2024 Gateway Games in Abeokuta, winning an impressive five gold medals out of six.

“What Dr. Akpata has done is highly significant for the growth of sports in Nigeria. It will serve as strong motivation for our cricket teams to continue to pursue excellence and bring home trophies,” Enabulele stated.

He further emphasized the importance of such gestures, urging others to follow suit: “I call on sports administrators at the national and state levels, as well as private individuals and corporate organizations, to support and encourage our athletes and coaches. Sports development cannot be left to the government alone.”

Enabulele also praised the dedication of the athletes and coaches, saying, “This reward is a true testament to hard work, resilience, and a passion for sporting excellence. I commend our cricket players and coaches for their commitment and for making Edo proud.”

Last week, Dr. Uyi Akpata redeemed his cash pledge for the Nigeria National Sports Festival, totaling ₦4,450,00 awarded to the Edo State cricket teams for their outstanding performance at the 2024 Gateway Games held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
