Oba of Benin mediates in FG, ASUU crisis


His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, bid Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their lingering discord to avert the collapse of tertiary education in the country. 


The Benin Monarch said  ASUU strike will disrupt academic calendar thereby creating setbacks and untold hardship for students and parents, the Oba noted this when he played host to a delegation from the Bayero University Kano(BUK) community in Kano led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sadi Abbas in his Palace in Benin City. 


Oba Ewuare II profusely thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for deeming it most appropriate based on his sentimental attachment to Kano, for appointing him to serve in the capacity of the Chancellor of the Bayero University, Kano and recounted his fond cherished memories of the ancient city of Kano where his grandmother lived. 


Omo N’‘Oba N’Edo reassured the University community through the visiting delegation that he will do his very best to uplift the academic, physical structures of the University and concluded that he look forward to learning new ideas, as the relationships should be mutual. 


Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sadi Abbas formerly on behalf of the Bayero University congratulated His Royal Majesty on the appointment as the Chancellor of the University and informed that since the inception of the University 45 years ago, the Oba of Benin appointment as Chancellor made it the 4th in the University with 55,000 students population, 18 faculties, adding that prominent Nigerians have graduated from the University, amongst whom is the current Inspector-General of Police. 


The erudite Professor explained that the University Chancellor is the Chief Host of all the University Convocation Ceremonies and used the occasion to congratulate the Benin Monarch on the commencement of the return of the stolen Benin artefacts to the Oba of Benin and prayed God for more wisdom, guidance, good health for His Royal Majesty to administer Benin Kingdom and Bayero University. 


The Principal Officers of the University accompanied Professor Sadi Abbas to the Palace where the Annual Report containing all vital information about the University, monthly/weekly bulletins revealing the update activities of the University and the University plaque, usually presented to prestigious visitors of the University were presented to the revered Oba of Benin.
