The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has strongly condemned the reported assault on Juliet Enabulele Asein, a journalist with the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS), allegedly carried out by one Kelly Okungbowa, an aide to the Governor of Edo State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, December 6, 2025, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, described the attack as “an egregious violation of press freedom and women’s rights,” stressing that such acts undermine the safety and dignity of journalists carrying out their constitutional duties.

NAWOJ urged the Edo State Government and relevant authorities to take swift and decisive action against the alleged perpetrator. The association further called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of Kelly Okungbowa to ensure justice is served.

“We stand firmly with Juliet Enabulele Asein and the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ),” the statement read, urging media stakeholders, civil society organisations, and the public to unite in condemning the assault.

NAWOJ also emphasized the need for enhanced protection of journalists, reiterating that safeguarding press freedom is essential to sustaining democracy. The association called for immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of Enabulele Asein and other media professionals working in the state.

The statement was signed by NAWOJ National Secretary, Comrade Wasilah Ladan.
