The truth is, there are certain boundaries that, once crossed, can damage our relationship with them. Some may seem small in the moment, but over time, they add up.

If we want our children to respect us—not just as parents, but as people—we need to be mindful of these lines we should never cross.

1) Breaking their trust

Trust is the foundation of any strong relationship, and that includes the one you have with your child.

When they confide in you, they’re showing vulnerability. If you break that trust—by sharing their secrets, making promises you don’t keep, or dismissing their feelings—it sends a message that their thoughts and emotions don’t matter.

Over time, this can lead to resentment. They may start keeping things from you, not because they want to, but because they feel like they have to.

If you want your child to respect you as they grow older, make sure they know their trust is safe with you.

2) Dismissing their feelings

I’ll never forget the day my child came home from school, clearly upset. When I asked what was wrong, they told me a friend had ignored them all day.

Without thinking, I said, “Oh, don’t worry about it. I’m sure it’s nothing.” I meant well—I just wanted them to feel better. But I could see the hurt in their eyes. To them, it wasn’t “nothing”. It mattered.

That moment taught me an important lesson: dismissing a child’s feelings, even unintentionally, can make them feel unheard and unimportant.

If we brush off their emotions when they’re young, why would they come to us when they’re older? Respect goes both ways, and it starts with truly listening to how they feel.

3) Controlling every decision

As children grow, their brains develop the ability to think independently and make decisions for themselves. In fact, research shows that by the age of six, kids already have a strong sense of personal autonomy and begin resisting control that feels unnecessary.

Of course, as parents, it’s our job to guide them. But there’s a big difference between guidance and control. Constantly making decisions for them—what they wear, who they befriend, how they spend their free time—can leave them feeling powerless.

Over time, this can lead to rebellion or, on the other end of the spectrum, difficulty making decisions on their own. If we want them to respect us as they grow older, we need to respect their ability to make choices too.

4) Mocking or embarrassing them

What might seem like a harmless joke to you can feel completely different to your child. Laughing at their mistakes, teasing them in front of others, or bringing up embarrassing moments can make them feel small and disrespected.

Children are constantly figuring out who they are, and their self-esteem is still developing. When they feel mocked—especially by the people they’re supposed to trust the most—it can leave a lasting impact.

If we want them to respect us as they grow older, we need to show them that their feelings matter. That starts with treating them with the same kindness and dignity we expect in return.

5) Never admitting when you’re wrong

Growing up, adults always seemed so sure of themselves. If they made a mistake, they rarely acknowledged it. If they hurt someone’s feelings, the conversation moved on like nothing happened.

But as a child, it was obvious. You “knew” when something wasn’t fair. You “felt” when someone’s words stung. And yet, there was no apology—just an unspoken rule that adults were always right.

That kind of thinking doesn’t build respect; it builds resentment. Kids don’t need perfect parents, but they do need honest ones. Admitting when you’re wrong shows them that respect isn’t about power—it’s about accountability.

6) Dismissing their interests

Kids light up when they talk about the things they love. Whether it’s a TV show, a video game, or a hobby you don’t quite understand, their interests are a big part of who they are.

But too often, adults brush these things off as silly or unimportant. A quick “That’s nice” or an eye roll might not seem like a big deal, but to a child, it can feel like rejection.

Respecting them means respecting what excites them—even if it’s not something you personally relate to. When you show genuine interest in what they care about, you’re showing them that they matter. And that kind of respect lasts a lifetime.

7) Making them feel like your love is conditional

When a child feels like they have to earn love—through achievements, good behavior, or meeting expectations—they start to believe that their worth depends on how well they perform.

Over time, this can create deep insecurity. They may grow up seeking approval in all the wrong places or struggling to feel truly accepted for who they are.

Respect isn’t built on fear of disappointment. It’s built on the security of knowing that, no matter what, they are loved exactly as they are.
