Oleh Township Stadium in Delta State became rowdy today(Sunday, May 9th, 2021) as the fans of Holly Arrow encroached on the pitch in protest against Bendel Insurance FC of Benin and forced the game to an abrupt end.
The game kicked off smoothly with both sides playing good football until in the 79th minute when a Holly Arrow striker collided with Insurance goalkeeper in an aerial contest.
The home fans, who expected the centre referee to penalise the Insurance goalkeeper, invaded the field of play seeing that their wish was not forthcoming. They broke the barrier and invaded the pitch to attack the referees and Match Assessor.
They remained uncontrollable for about an hour in spite of all entreaties by some of the home team’s management staff and other lovers of the game.
Their attempt to attack the police as the trouble continued was the height of it as Insurance Cameraman was assaulted and his camera damaged, while pebbles and stones rained on the pitch, injuring the Match Assessor in his head.
It took the efforts of the General Manager of the Holly Arrow and his men to calm the situation and cleverly whisked the referees out of the stadium.
Before the disruption the game was goalless.
