Group wants Okpebholo to declare Ewere Day as public holiday

A Benin based socio-political group, Aiguobasinmwin Movement, has called on the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to declare public holiday for Ewere Day.

According to the group, “the day is fixed for 30th of December 2024 by the Benin palace as a day set aside for all Benins to celebrate the Igue Festival.”

In a statement by Iyamu Osaro Culture(President) and Osayuki-Osa Benson(Secretary General), the group stated that “it is worthy to note that Igue-Edohia and Ewere Day are part of core programme of events for the ongoing Igue Festival.

“While Igue-Edohia will hold on Sunday, the 29th of December 2024 as prayer eve of Ewere Day, then the Ewere Day will hold on Monday, the 30th of December 2024 which is also a day designed for the Benins to pray and celebrate Igue Festival in grand style.”

Aiguobasinmwin Movement noted that with the Governor Okpebholo administration’s vow “to continually respect traditional institutions, uphold, advance, preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Edo people, it is necessary for Governor Monday Okpebholo to act in accordance with what he has vowed to always do for Edo people by declaring public holiday for 30th of December 2024 to enable the good people of Benin Kingdom have time to celebrate the ongoing Igue Festival as fixed by our revered palace which started on the 14th of December 2024.”
