By Chief Patrick Osagie Eholor

In a shocking move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly approved a staggering ₦90 billion to subsidize the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage for Nigerian Muslims. This massive allocation of funds raises serious questions about the government’s priorities and its commitment to maintaining a secular state.

Nigeria, a country with a diverse population of various religious beliefs, should not be funneling such enormous amounts of money into religious affairs, especially when there are pressing issues that demand urgent attention. It is vital to remember that religion is personal, and the government should not favor one religion over others.

While it is essential to respect the beliefs and practices of every citizen, it is equally crucial to ensure that public funds are utilized for the common good.

With critical challenges in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, the ₦90 billion Hajj subsidy could have been better utilized to address these pressing needs that affect all Nigerians, regardless of their religious affiliations.

Other religious groups in the country are justified in expressing their concerns over this apparent favoritism. The government’s responsibility is to ensure fairness and equity in its dealings with all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.

The current situation risks creating divisions among Nigerians and fostering a sense of marginalization among those who do not adhere to Islam.

The government must reconsider its decision and focus on prioritizing the welfare of all Nigerians by investing in sectors that have a direct impact on the quality of life. It is time to move beyond religious lines and work towards building a united and prosperous Nigeria for all.
