President of the Benin Solidarity Movement(BSM), Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, not to let some individuals to misapply his recent directive disbanding the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

In a statement he made on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020, the activist said: “Benin Solidarity Movement (BSM) view with apprehension the recent pronouncement of the Inspector General of Police(IGP) disbanding the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the wake of recent illegalities associated with the team.

“Much as the BSM is in agreement with the decision, we wish to place it on record that the move of the IGP though acknowledged and appreciated, is coming at a high cost and could be eventually misapplied.

“Our stand is that the disbandment of the terror inspiring SARS should not be turned into an avenue whereby the citizens are subjected to other subhuman degradation that may be more harrowing than what is obtainable presently.”

Going forth, he asserted: “The SARS was created for the purpose of putting a stop to criminality and thereby allowing the citizens to live in peace and do whatever legitimate business they’re doing without fear of any sort. We are urging the IGP not to let the scrapping of the SARS team encourage deadlier evils.

“Rather, the SARS should be reformed in line with the ideology of the SWART Team in the USA. The era where the SARS become willful tools in the hands of celebrated criminal elements in the society should be done with forever in this new dispensation that we all look out for. Also the SARS should never again become escorts to undesirable elements as it used to be.

“In this new dispensation the SARS should be made to become a backup team that responds to emergency situations where the regular police exhibit inadequacies in the way and manner they handle such emergencies.”
