Edo State Waste Management Board (ESWMB) at the weekend embarked on monitoring to ensure compliance with the weekly environmental sanitation exercise across major roads, streets and markets in Benin City.

The Assistant General Manager, Mrs. Efosa Imade, led the team of environmental officers across various locations to monitor the level of compliance and issue violation letters to defaulters of environmental laws ranging from improper disposal of refuse, waste burning, overgrown weeds in the premises and littering of premises.

Other offences were accumulation of dumps, blocked drains, discharge of waste water into the gutters, failure to discharge duty of evacuation of waste, insanitary bathroom, accumulation of junks and dilapidated inspection chamber, among others.

The environmental officers visited various locations in Benin City, including Boundary Road; all adjourning streets up to Ihama; Sakponba Road and all adjourning streets up to 2nd East circular.

Others are Five Junction through TV Road; adjourning streets up to Isekhere; Lagos street axis; adjourning streets up to Iwehen and Wire road; Sapele road axis; Siluko up to Oliha market and New Benin axis.

Imade said the waste management board has been serving notices on facilities owners, landlords, tenants and occupants on the need to maintain cleanliness in their facilities.

According to her, “We expect that by now, they should have done those things but from what we are seeing, we noticed that a lot of this nuisance still exists; they have not been abated.

“We are going to apply to the sanitation court for a summons to be served to these facilities, so that we can invite them to the sanitation court and after that, if they still don’t respond, then a warrant of arrest will be issued against them to bring them to the court to face the charges.”
