Intense pressure is being mounted on Comrade Festus Alenkhe, the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), to throw in the towel and participate in the state guber poll coming up in September 2024.
Believing in his leadership capabilities flowing from his landmark achievements in his less than two years in office as Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ a group working underground is said to be putting Alenkhe under pressure to contest the 2024 gubernatorial poll on a yet to be disclosed party platform.
Popular News finding is that the group, Alenkhe Solidarity Movement (ASM), interested in good governance, is convinced that given the opportunity Alenkhe will replicate his chains of achievements in the NUJ in Edo State.
Other points counted in Alenkhe’s favour is that he is young in comparison to a lot of others jostling to govern the state. He is said to have a lot of valuable contacts whom he can reach out to for support when he becomes governor plus the fact that he hails from Edo Central which many consider to be in prime position to produce Governor Obaseki’s successor.
However, reacting to the situation, Alenkhe in a statement said: “It has come to my notice that some yet to be identified persons have printed my poster purportedly in relation to the 2024 governorship election in Edo State.
“Let it be known that I did not authorize any person to do that, neither do such have my blessing. I have also not at anytime discussed it with any person, known or unknown, consciously or unconsciously.
“I am presently very much at home with the mandate of journalists in Edo State to serve as their chairman. I believe it is one thing after the other.
“I therefore urge the general public to disregard the poster and its content in its entirety.”
