The ever busy Airport Road, Benin City, the Edo State capital, was thrown into total confusion on Thursday afternoon as gunshots rang sporadically as two opposing sides engaged themselves in a show of strength.
Information reaching Popular News is that the cause of the fight may not be unconnected to the declaration of the restoration of Comrade Philip Shaibu as the deputy governor of the state by a Federal High Court presided over by Mr. Justice James Omotosho who also ordered the restoration of his security details.
It was learnt that the Benin Airport was filled with the sympathisers of Comrade Shaibu who had come to the airport to receive him on his arrival from Abuja after the court ruling.
Popular News heard that the shooting incident commenced as soon as Comrade Shaibu and a horde of his allies in the All Progressives Congress (APC) namely the party’s flagbearer for the forthcoming governorship poll in the state, Senator Monday Okpebholo and ex-reps member, Omosede Igbinedion, drove out of the airport.
The attackers, who were said to have stationed themselves somewhere opposite the exit gate of the airport in readiness, opened fire shooting indiscriminately. And in retaliation the opposing “battalion” allegedly responded with their own staccato of gunshots throwing the whole environment into bedlam as passersby took to their heels to hide in any available space that could accommodate them. Some unlucky few were fatally injured in the process.
