Former Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has opened up on his post-tenure international trips saying he has gone global mobilizing Diaspora and international community against Edo state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo to stop him from delivering President Bola Tinubu in the state.
APC stalwart, John Mayaki, made the revelation while talking about the motive behind the former governor’s ‘meet and greet’ movement in some beer parlours overseas.
According to Mayaki, “Obaseki who exploded and threatened governor Okpebholo in a recent video when he addressed some Nigerians in Birmingham City during his routine ‘meet and greet’ across Europe, Canada, United States and Asia said, Okpebholo cannot come from Irrua to dictate to anyone in Benin City, because they are not ‘stupid’.
His sharply worded threats and intimidation among others included saying that Okpebholo from Irrua is threatening Obaseki from Benin City; observers say Obaseki is waging tribal rebellion against the non-Benin governor and therefore inciting them.
“He also said, ‘Okpebholo will see’, ‘I am going globally and I will wait for Okpebholo. I won’t sit down and watch Okpebholo deliver 2.5 million votes to President Bola Tinubu.
“‘We are not stupid. If he is stupid as a governor, we are not stupid. The only person Okpebholo cares about is President Tinubu.’
“These implied threats suggests that Obaseki’s ‘meet and greet’ across the world was aimed at mobilizing dissents against his country and the state government. His comments could escalate tensions in the polity, if not curtailed.
“When a former governor boosts that he has gone global and rallying international pressure against the current administration in his country, what does that suggest?
“It would be recalled that during the last governorship election in the state, he threatened to burn down the country if his candidate does not win the election and that he was ready to lead his boys to overrun the country. And today, he has said he is also mobilizing international community and the global world.”
Going further, Mayaki, said, “these provocative statements are capable of destabilizing the country. These overseas engagements seems designed against Edo State and the Federal Government. Obaseki is busy delegitimizing Governor Okpebholo and inflaming partisan tensions and tribal rivalry.”
