Festus Alenkhe Chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has warned Journalists in the state to be apolitical while discharging their duties.

He affirmed that Journalists can market any politician but must remain apolitical in line with the ethics of the profession.

He recalled that recently when Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar came on his campaign programme in Benin “Journalists were on ground when Atiku visited. They were spotted at the Benin Airport, Oba of Benin Palace, PDP Secretariat and the rally venue at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.”

Going further, he emphasised: “Tinubu(APC Presidential candidate), Obi(LP Presidential candidate) and other candidates will come any moment from now. Same journalists will also cover and report. We are obeying our calling.”

He warned: “But any journalist found to be deeply political will be examined by the Edo NUJ Ethics and Disciplinary Committee who are on ground watching now.
Let us go in line with the constitution of the Nigeria Union Of Journalists.”

He advised that fake and unfounded news should be avoided, adding “cross check information before going to press. Do not allow politicians to use you to air or publish libelous and scandalous news items. When you are sued they won’t be there to help you.”
