IOM tackles dearth of information on migration

International Organization for Migration(IOM) has done the sensitization of over 18000 people in Edo State, through mobile cinema on the dangers of irregular migration.

The programme which was held at the artery of Benin City Centre, Ring Road was targetted to bridge the information gap on irregular migration and trafficking in persons in endemic communities and across various local government areas in the State.

According to the Project Assistant, Elijah Elaigu, the message is to enlight people on the need to travel safe through the right route, noting that experience shared by the returnees revealed that fellow Nigerians do the trafficking in persons.

He affirmed that community based re-integration programs have been put in place as an empowerment for the returnees.

Eliagu disclosed that interventions are ongoing for people to become self employed within their locality.

Austin Odile, the acting State Director, National Orientation Agency(NOA), submitted that people possessing the right documents should travel the right way.

The Mobile Cinema, he stated, is an avenue at telling the story of those who have been lucky to escape the dangers in irregular migration.

A returnee, Eugene Olumese, who shared his experience advised people not to take the same irregular route and fall in the hands of the traffickers.

He concluded that many fall victims as a result of dearth of the right information on how to go about travelling in the right way.
