Delta State Governor, Sherrif Oborevwori, has promised that the state will support President Bola Tinubu’s quest for a second term in office in 2027.

“We have been in opposition for ten years. Mr. President has shown us love. We cannot face him in 2027 to work against him. We must reciprocate him,” Governor Oborevwori submitted.

The governor made the promise while speaking on Monday at the official defection of members of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) to the All Progressives Congress(APC) held at the Cenotaph in Asaba.

While welcoming the new APC members, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinmma, who is also the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, said that Oborevwori’s performance has marked him out as an achiever who is eminently qualified to be a member of the ruling party.

He stated that “we are here to demonstrate that APC means well for Nigeria,” adding that “the Governor(Oborevwori) in his wisdom decided to join our great party.”

Uzodinmma called on the people of Delta State to support Oborevwori in his giant strides. He promised that the Progressive Governors Forum will also support him all the way.

Immediate past Governor of Delta State, who was also the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2023 general elections, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, said that whatever decision that the defectors took is meant for the good of the state.

According to him, “there is a will for us to connect to Abuja. This move is bold, strategic and well intentioned. It is in the best interest of Delta State. I will always follow the best interest of our state. We need to embrace each other. Together we can truly dominate the politics of Delta State.”

On 2027, Okowa said that Delta State supports Governor Oborevwori and President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a return to office, adding “we believe in the decision that we have taken.”

The National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, praised Senator Okowa and Governor Oborevwori for the cordial relationship between them. He stated: “Our core value in APC is progressive leadership. We believe in openess. We believe in self accountability.”

Governor Oborevwori in his submission said:   “I believe in action not media stunt. What you have seen today is a movement. We had  consultations at all levels before doing this. We decided to move. We have been in opposition for ten years. Mr. President has shown us love. We cannot face him in 2027 to work against him. We must reciprocate him. When we move together we will all benefit from all that’s in the federal.”

Oborevwori affirmed that Delta State is eager to be part of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu which he asserted have much in common with his MORE.

On the issue of factions in the APC fold in the state, Oborevwori said that the APC unlike the opposition PDP is well structured and in line with the party’s constitution he is now the leader of the party in Delta State saying: “I dont believe in faction. I am now in charge.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu at the occasion described the defection as “a political tsunami of unimaginable proportion” while also reaffirming that in accordance with the APC constitution Governor Oborevwori is now the leader of the party in Delta State.
