EBS issues strong warning to govt officials

The management of the Edo State Broadcasting Service (EBS) has issued a strongly worded notice to the state government appointees who “have consistently declined to engage with journalists,” particularly those representing the station.

According to the statement, “this has significantly hampered our efforts in covering the first 100 days of Governor Okpebholo’s administration. As the fourth estate, the media has a vital role in promoting transparency and accountability within our society.

“Clear communication regarding government policies and programmes is essential; the public deserves to hear directly from their leaders and access the information that impacts their lives.

“As a government-owned television and radio station, EBS operates under the mandate of the distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, our governor, with the objective of functioning with the same standards as privately-owned stations.

“Consequently, one of our fundamental principles is to avoid obscuring the truth or covering for any appointee or elected officials, especially when their agencies are under scrutiny and require action or feedback for the public.”

To add weight to its policy statement the EBS management said: “We have instructed our team to document all attempts made to communicate with these officials. Each report will outline the number of efforts made to secure interviews and will clearly indicate any instances in which officials have chosen not to respond.

“We cannot continue to portray a facade of unreachability when an official has deliberately opted not to engage with us. Should individuals decline an interview, this will be explicitly stated in our reports.”

The EBS management commended Governor Monday Okpebholo “for his unwavering commitment to public service. From the beginning of his tenure, he has actively engaged in inspecting various projects throughout the state while continuing to fulfil his responsibilities.

“It is perplexing that some appointed officials would choose not to support a government that prioritises transparency and serves the public interest by providing vital information.

In conclusion, the EBS submitted: “We firmly believe that the current situation can be improved, and we look forward to fostering a more collaborative relationship with both appointees and elected officials. Together, we can ensure that the citizens of Edo State receive the clarity and information they rightfully deserve.”
