Bernard Joman, acting Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC), have promised workers in the state a promising and better future under his leadership.
On what Edo workers would benefit under his leadership, he stated: “Edo workers have a promising and better future under my leadership of the NLC. We have brought a lot of innovations into labour. The first problem that we had was that we had a thug, who doesn’t know the nitty gritty of civil service operation, as our chairman.
“That was a major setback to the NLC in Edo State. When we realized this and by November 11th, 2024 that we took over the leadership we have brought in so many innovations into public and private service.
“Today, we can proudly say that the issue of minimum wage has been discussed and His Excellency, the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has asked us to constitute a committee for minimum wage. Also the issue of CPS(Contributory Pension Scheme) which the former chairman does not know about and which was killing retired civil servants slowly is in focus.
“I am proud to say those issues are being addressed. A committee has been set up by the state government to review the Contributory Pension Scheme and which we are doing already.”
On Governor Monday Okpebholo he asserted: “I want to say we have a listening governor. A governor who has the interest of his people at heart. Because of that so many things are working positively for the workers of Edo State.”
Speaking on the role the union played in ensuring that the family of a former Chairman of the NLC in Edo State, Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, who died under controversial circumstances, was given prompt attention, he disclosed: “Yes, we have a governor that talk and do. There are some governors who in the situation of things will just try to pacify you by promising you what they cannot do or they’ll want to complain that some X, Y is the reason that they’re not doing it.
“The Governor promised to give late Comrade Eboigbodin’s daughter a job. By the special grace of God a week after he made that promise the lady got a job from the state government. Also as we speak today Comrade Eboigbodin’s gratuity has been paid.
“His death benefits and other pension entitlements have been paid. We have a governor that promised and has fulfilled all his promises. It will surprise you that the day we intimated the Governor about Comrade Eboigbodin’s demise he instantly accompanied us to the family’s house, made promises and has fulfilled all of them.”
