The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Benin (UNIBEN) Branch has withdrawn its services from the postgraduate programme of the institution to press home the demand for payment of outstanding entitlements for postgraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision.

The withdrawal of services by the Academic Staff in the varsity was not unconnected with indebtedness on the part of the school’s management throughout the tenure of the current administration coming to an end in December 2024.

The action is the outcome of a congress of the branch last Friday, where it was resolved that all members of ASUU UNIBEN withdraw their participation in the postgraduate programme of the institution with immediate effect.

The action of the varsity academic staff is meant to compel the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, to harken to their demands thus forestalling interruption of the postgraduate programme that may result in huge sums of indebtedness to the aggrieved academic staff.

Asked why the Union is resorting to this action towards the tail end of the Professor Salami administration, a reliable source within the leadership cadre of the ASUU Uniben, said: “If we do not stand up for ourselves, especially in this very harsh and excruciating socio-economic climate, no one will. The laborer is worthy of his wages.”

A credible source within the ranks of the university management disclosed that efforts are in top gear to resolve all outstanding entitlements of the ASUU members involved in the postgraduate program of the institution.
