“The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.”
– Abraham Lincoln

In the pursuit of justice, there are no guarantees—only the conviction that right must be defended and truth spoken, regardless of the outcome. This belief, powerfully captured in Abraham Lincoln’s words, has been the driving force behind our legal challenge to the Edo State governorship election.

A few days ago, the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed our appeal seeking to declare Asue Ighodalo as duly elected governor of Edo State. While this marks the end of our judicial quest, it does not invalidate the cause we stood for. We pursued this case not out of desperation, but out of deep conviction that the election was fraught with irregularities and that the will of the people was subverted.

We went to court because we believed we won that election. We went to court because silence in the face of injustice is complicity. We stood firm because we owed it to the people of Edo State—and to our conscience—not to let a flawed process pass unchallenged.

Now that the Supreme Court has had its final say, we are ready and willing to return to opposition mode—strong, vigilant, and principled. Our responsibility now is to hold the government accountable, to check its excesses, expose its shortcomings, and ensure it remains sensitive to the needs of the people. We will not abdicate our duty. We will listen to the cries of Edo people and amplify their voices so that government hears clearly and responds effectively with policies that provide real and lasting relief.

Being in opposition is not a retreat—it is a noble calling. It is a space where ideas are sharpened, and truth is fearlessly spoken. It is where the people’s interest is protected when power begins to forget its purpose. We embrace this role not with bitterness, but with renewed determination and clarity of purpose.

Though the courts have ruled, the journey to justice and good governance continues. Let history record that we did not stay silent. We fought because the cause was just. And we will continue to fight—now from the opposition trenches—because Edo must win.
