Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, emerged as a stalwart advocate for the bill.

“Methinks our current framework doth suffer from a glaring lacuna,” Senator Nwoko posited.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) doth focus on enforcement and interdiction, but what of sustained rehabilitation, grassroots awareness, and long-term reintegration? These vital components necessitate a distinct institutional mandate.”

Senator Nwoko, who had previously proposed a similar bill, underscored the imperative of a multifaceted approach to combat drug abuse. He revealed that during a recent constituency visit, a student-led NGO approached him with a draft bill addressing the same issue, further highlighting the urgency and public demand for a dedicated framework.

“I commend my distinguished colleague, Senator Rufai Hanga, for sponsoring this timely bill,” Nwoko added. “This is a national emergency; we must act with clarity and courage, lest we falter in our duty to the Nigerian people.”

The Senate, now back in session, is poised to accelerate legislative attention to bills addressing public health and social stability, reaffirming its commitment to responsive governance.

As the nation grapples with the scourge of drug abuse, the establishment of a dedicated framework for drug awareness and rehabilitation offers a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction. Will the Senate rise to the challenge and provide the necessary support for this critical initiative? Only time will tell.
