Protect women from gender based violence, says National Human Rights Commission

National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) has called for the protection of women against sexual and gender based violence.


The Commission made the call while on a sensitisation cum awareness campaign to the Secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City on Thursday morning to mark the   International Day for the eradication of all forms of Gender Based Violence against women.


Olumide Dosumu,  Assistant Director and Edo State Coordinator of the Commission, who led the group said: “We are here on awareness cum sensitisation visit that the female gender should always be protected as they are considered as members of the vulnerable group and they have peculiar rights.


“By all means necessary we should always endeavour to protect their rights.


“This is the essence of our visit. It is a 16 days programme. The Commission every year starting from 25th November has a 16 days of activism. There are different programmes geared towards raising awareness about sexual and gender based violence.


“The last day(the 16th day) culminates on the 10th December which is the International Human Rights Day.”
