Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the Labour Party(LP) standard bearer in the last presidential poll and Barrister Olumide Akpata, the party’s flagbearer in the forthcoming governorship poll in Edo State, have appealed to the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare 11, N’Ogidigan, to champion the campaign for a free and fair election in the country.
They spoke at the Benin Palace last weekend when they led the party bigwigs in the state to solicit for the monarch’s blessings as they prepare for state-wide campaign for the governorship poll.
While addressing the Benin monarch during the visit, Mr. Obi stated: “Let the people elect those who will serve them. Your Majesty, that is our simple request and I think you’ve always been a father to all. And I know in this election, you will remain a father to all.”
Barrister Akpata, while soliciting the Oba’s blessings, promised that the LP under his watch as governor in Edo State, will provide people-oriented and impactful governance throughout the 18 local government areas of the state.
In his response, the monarch, while describing Barrister Akpata as a true son of the soil, wished him well in his ambition. He charged the guber hopeful to always uphold his electioneering campaign promises when he gets to office.
On Mr. Peter Obi’s arrival in Benin City, his first port of call was the State Secretariat of Labour Party situated at Sakponba Road where a mammoth crowd of party supporters and the party bigwigs were waiting for him even as they defied the heavy downpour.
Rounding off his engagements in Edo State that afternoon, Mr. Obi, accompanied by the mammoth crowd, moved to the GRA axis of Benin to commission the campaign office of Barrister Akpata.
