Kenoma Ojuederie, Head of Operations in the Benin Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has called for a collaboration between the agency and the media.
He made the call when he led some members of the agency’s management team on a visit to the Secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) in Benin City on Friday.
According to Ojuederie, “Journalists are very critical stakeholders when it comes to disaster management. They’re active in disemminating timely and accurate information. We are here to seek collaboration to see how we can improve on our area of mutual understanding as regards disaster management.
“We also seek to find a way of disemminating information sensitising the public on disaster control prevention measures. We know that the media is critical as we want to get information out to the public.”
Responding, the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ, Festus Alenkhe, while giving his support to the idea of the collaboration between the media and the NEMA charged the agency to incorporate the aspect of training of media executives on roles they should play in disaster situation so that the collaboration would be of benefit to the people during the period.”
