NAWOJ/MWAN organise breast and cervical cancer awareness programme

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ), Edo State, in collaboration with the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, MWAN, Edo State has organized a cancer awareness programme to mark the world cancer day which is celebrated annually on February 8.

The programme featured counselling, breast and  examination/mammography, cervical examination and screening, and a visit to the Department of Radiotherapy, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), amongst others.

Addressing participants, Doctor Ehi Isa, President, MWAN, Edo State, stated that breast and cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women of child bearing age and urged women to take full charge of their health.

On her part, a Radiation/Clinical Oncologist, UBTH, Doctor Lucy Idiese, added that early diagnosis of cancer with prompt treatment leads to less invasive treatments and longer survival of the patient.

In her remarks, the Chairperson, NAWOJ, Comrade Adesuwa Ehimuan, noted that it was important to synergize with professional bodies to fight against breast  cancer and reduce its mortality rate in the state.

The breast and cervical cancer free screening exercise is every Wednesday in February 2023 at Doctors House Ugbowo Road, Benin City starting from 9am.
