The role of the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Edo State Governor, held by Honourable Gani Audu, has recently become a topic of discussion and even mockery among opposition members, as well as among some members of his own party. This situation has raised questions about his influence in the role.

There is often a misconception regarding the responsibilities of the CoS, as many expect the position to carry more visibility and direct influence than it typically does.

Historically, the CoS position traces its origins to the United States, where it plays a crucial administrative role in managing the governor’s schedule, filtering communications, and overseeing the flow of information, effectively acting as a gatekeeper to ensure the governor prioritises critical issues. The emergence of the CoS position in the US military dates back to 1881, with its evolution to presidential administration marked by John R. Steelman’s appointment in 1946.

In Nigeria, the title “Chief of Staff” was first introduced in 1979, when former President Shehu Shagari appointed Professor Yaya Aliyu to the role.

The Chief of Staff serves as a senior advisor to the head of government, with oversight of executive office operations and guidance on key policy decisions. Key responsibilities include:
– Managing the government’s agenda and priorities
– Coordinating policy initiatives and their implementation
– Advising on appointments and critical decisions
– Overseeing crisis responses
– Liaising with other government officials and stakeholders
– Ensuring effective communication and information flow

In the Nigerian political landscape, the role of the Chief of Staff (CoS) often finds itself enveloped in secrecy and controversy. There’s a widespread perception of overreach and attempts to exert undue influence, which complicates the intricate dynamics between the CoS, the governor, and the deputy governor. This tension frequently breeds power struggles, especially in the lead-up to the CoS’s responsibilities.

At the state level, many CoS name themselves as the Chief Security Officer (CSO), leading them to undermine the deputy governor’s position and its significance. Their visibility often exceeds what is appropriate for their role, and they have been known to overstep boundaries, taking on responsibilities that do not belong to them—such as coordinating unsavoury elements on behalf of the government, thus detracting from the perceived dignity of the CoS office.

A vivid illustration of this phenomenon usually occurred during the elections where CoS are seen in a convoy alongside security personnel and heavily armed individuals, moving from polling station to polling station and engaging in behaviour unbecoming of a government official.

In stark contrast stands Honourable Gani Audu, whose impressive track record highlights his strengths as a strategic thinker and an effective implementer in political circle in the State.
He has fashioned a reputation for working diligently behind the scenes, delivering outstanding results without craving the limelight. Unlike others who create factions through their quest for attention, Honourable Audu embodies a spirit of unity and strength.

His tenure as the executive chairman of the Etsako West Council area is a testament to his approach. While others sought validation through noise, Honourable Audu’s innovative policies and steadfast commitment earned him the enduring trust and respect of the community—making him the first council chairman to be re-elected consecutively. His trajectory continued as he transitioned into a lawmaker and became the gubernatorial running mate to Pastor Osaze Ize-Iyamu, securing a respected position in the political arena.

Honourable Audu even willingly set aside the chance to return to the state assembly, driven by his genuine desire to support others. His exceptional coordination of All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts, such as Senator Adams Oshiomole, was instrumental in achieving remarkable victories in both the national and gubernatorial elections.

It is perhaps the result of his relentless dedication and widespread popularity that propelled him to the esteemed position of Chief of Staff, a role he embraces with integrity and purpose.

Honourable Audu has, no doubt, brought respect and glamour back to the office of the CoS. His demeanour and carriage are exceptionally exemplary. He has also shown that one can get the job done without being in the spotlight.
