Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has commended the state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his administration’s sustained fight against cultism and other forms of criminality, which members said contributed to a peaceful Yuletide celebration in Edo State.
The commendation was made via a communiqué issued at the end of the NUJ monthly congress held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the Council Secretariat, No. 1 Sir Gabriel Igbinedion Way, GRA, Benin City, with members drawn from the union’s fifteen chapels across the state in attendance.
Journalists further lauded the construction of the Ikpoba Hill flyover, describing it as a strategic project that would ease traffic congestion, improve road safety and stimulate economic activities.
The NUJ urged the state government to address nuisance activities at Ring Road and other commercial centres, clamp down on illegal revenue collectors, and ensure the repair and maintenance of street and traffic lights to enhance public safety.
On media–government relations, the Congress called for improved engagement through regular briefings by commissioners and a quarterly media parley between the governor and journalists to promote transparency and accountability.
Members also advised politicians and political actors to shun hate speech and politics of bitterness ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for issue-based politics that would foster peace and deepen democracy.
The Congress passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the Council led by Comrade Festus Alenkhe citing its commitment to professionalism, unity and effective representation of journalists in the state.
The Communiqué was signed by the Chairman, Dr Festus Alenkhe; the Secretary and member of the Communique Drafting Committee, Andy Egbon and the Treasurer, Solomon Obozunya who was also a member of the Communique Drafting Committee.
