Fight-to-finish as new leader emerges in Edo local govt council

The legislative arm of Owan West Local Government Council yesterday impeached its Leader, Hon. Joy Ohonyon, while replacing her with Hon. Saturday Ohimai Ezomon from Ward 5.

In a well attended plenary at the Sabongida-Ora Council Secretariat, a petition was read to the House in which she was accused of divulging official information and prevention of sitting for personal interest.

After the petition signed by nine members of the House was read, a motion for her removal was moved by Hon. Felix Atiba from Ward 8 and seconded by Hon. Elijah Ohimai from Ward 1. Thereafter, the Clerk of the House affirmed the removal of Ohonyon as Leader, Owan West Legislative Council and the House unanimously voted in Ezomon as its new leader.

According to the statement jointly signed by the nine House members,”it’s not only that Hon. Joy Ohonyon is not capable of presiding well at plenaries, she lacks the intellectual ability to lead. She is flippant and divulges official information. This is detrimental to the business of the House.

“Besides, she prevented plenary on different occasions, improper dressing to plenary and wrong use of parliamentary language. Arising from the above and in accordance with section 19 of Local Government Law in Edo State as amended in 2002 and order 13, rule 3 of the standard order and rule of the legislative councils in Edo State, we the undersigned members of Owan West Legislative House have decided to remove the leader, Hon. Joy Ohonyon to refocus the House for better development.”

Meanwhile, the embittered Council Chairman, Hon. Dickson Ahonsi is said to be fighting tooth and nail to ensure the reinstatement of Ohonyon, his ally, but the House members remain defiant.
