The two men  however escaped while being taken to the Ugbekun Police Station. They had neither been arrested or prosecuted as they continue to be in hiding since the incident.

The Odionwere of Nomayo Street, Pa Thank -God  Ewere  is furious that the two gay suspects have not been arrested by the police and formally charged to court. He  said the failure of the police to fish out the suspects and charge them to court has continued to hunt the community. Pa Ewere said the suspects defiled the land and were required to perform certain traditional ceremonies to cleanse the land.

“We are surprised that almost ten years when these two men defiled our community, the police have not been able to bring them to face the consequences of their abominable act.

“We insist that the police must fish the two men  out  from wherever they may be hiding and bring them to book”, Pa Ewere told towncrier recently.

He said  said the elders and youths of Nomayo community would continue to demand for their arrest and  for the them to perform the cleansing of the land in accordance with the dictates of Benin tradition.

Same- sex relationship or homosexuality apart from being considered a taboo by Nigerian communities, is also a crime and offenders are liable to 14 years imprisonment.
