Exclusive: 13 year-old boy who killed father in Benin was his closest companion, says elder child

Comrade Abdulkarim Oronsaye, a civil rights activist, who is one of the children of the late WO11 Abdullahi Oronsaye, whose murder by his 13 year old son made headline news, has stated that the incident came as a shock to family members and neighbours.

“It is unfortunate that it happened. My dad was actually preparing for his 80th birthday which comes up in October. At different periods in his life time he was a military man, a lecturer in the Nigeria Defence Academy(NDA) and the Nigeria Military School(NMS). He was also a legislative officer at the Edo State House of Assembly.

“We used to have challenges with him but we will never think of doing anything or committing a heinous crime against him. What we do is that we let him be and we go out there to make a decent living for ourselves.

“The boy(Abubakar) who killed him is just 13 years of age and he has always lived with him. Abubakar was 3months old when his mother left him with our father. What he did was so shocking to us. Wherever you see our dad the boy was always with him. They go about together.

“We have since done his burial in Benin between the 23rd and 24th of July, 2021.

“Our request is that people of goodwill come to support us and pray for us as we lay him to rest.”
