In furtherance of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s charge for state-owned institutions to become self-reliant, the Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, has manufactured equipment for water distillation and recycling plastic waste as part of efforts to drive the institution’s industry linkages and develop local content.

Rector of the institution, Prof. Abiodun Falodun, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists, noted that there has been a deliberate effort to build the capacity of staff and students in the institution to respond to the industrial needs of the society.

According to him, “We have just built a water distiller and waste recycling equipment that have been tested. We designed the machines in the school and have deployed the water distillation machine at the school’s water factory. A lot of work went into the designing and manufacturing of these equipment and we appreciate the effort of the research team that worked on it.”

He added that there are talks on collaboration between the school and other water production companies in Benin on the roll out of the technology in factories in the city centre.

“We are pushing for partnerships on commercialisation of the technology and have undertaken to ensure that it serves the industry better than what already obtains. The waste recycling machine was designed to convert paper bags to plastic for reuse,” he stressed.
