Flowing from its June 2025 edition of its monthly congress, Presided over by its Chairman, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), has through its deliberation come up with some far reaching decisions, advice and support for the actions of the state government.
While giving kudos to the Edo State Government led by Governor Monday Okpebholo on its crackdown on cultists and their activities, the Council said that the crackdown is a critical step towards restoring public order and ensuring the safety of residents.
The Union urged that the momentum be sustained to guarantee lasting peace and sanity in the communities in the state.
Talking about the seasonal environmental challenges most part of the country including the state is facing, the Union advised the state government to be proactive in its approach as it prepares for the rainy season, particularly to mitigate the threats of flooding which have recently devastated parts of the country.
Residents of flood-prone zones were also adviced to stay alert and, where necessary, consider temporary relocation to safer grounds.
On the flyover under construction at Ramat Park in Ikpoba Hill, the Congress gave kudos to the state government while calling on the contracting firm, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation(CCECC) to urgently rehabilitate alternative routes so as to ease the movement of residents in this period of construction.
On the illegal activities of some community youth leaders (Okaigheles), the Congress expressed concerns as the recalcitrant Okaigheles continually impose unathorised exorbitant levies on land developers under the guise of community development.
According to the Congress such illegalities could dissuade investors and frustrate the state government’s broader vision for urban expansion and infrastructural development.
Going further, the Union appealed to politicians in the state to embrace politics devoid of hatred and bitterness, and to instead pursue peace-driven, development-oriented engagements ahead of the upcoming electoral season.
The Congress felicitated with the national leadership of the NUJ on the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Union, describing the milestone as a testament to the resilience and dedication of journalists across Nigeria and therefore extended members best wishes for a fruitful and impactful anniversary celebration.
