My name is Comrade Ede Agho of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Benin Chapel of the Edo State Council of the NUJ.
I joined the NTA 20 years ago as a cub reporter. By the grace of God I have worked with the high and mighty, the middle class and the very lowly people highlighting issues which drive society.
I am currently an Assistant Director in the NTA. My years in NTA International Abuja were particularly rewarding. For me, they spawned bonds of friendship with professional colleagues and Nigerians from varied walks of life.
This network has continued to impact positively on my career and personal life. The relationship I have nurtured over the years will be leveraged on to give Edo State NUJ Council members additional perspective and insights.
It will also assist in developing a range of new opportunities for our colleagues. Times have been challenging, and we require to respond in ways that will assist members develop new income streams and improve our quality of life.
I am determined to ensure that we build capacity to improve our performance in our primary constituencies and beyond. One area of intervention that is also very close to my heart is the post retirement life of our veterans.
Often, the post retirement life of our colleagues has been unhappy and distressing. It is time to brace up and make clear demands to guarantee a more decent life in retirement. Each time you see a colleague in retirement distress, it is a blight on our collective dignity.
We must come together and address this challenge. If given the opportunity to serve as Vice Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ you will certainly be enlisting a new servant who is eager to add value to a series of great initiatives that have already been firmly established by our founding heroes.
My dear colleagues, I have come before you in all humility and what I propose, is an offer of genuine service; service to assist in making our professional lives better and brighter. No matter what, our primary reference is journalism.
It is that which defines and identifies us. We must therefore be concerned to make journalism work for us. I am prepared to join this vanguard of honest labour and assist in changing our collective fortune. I ask for your vote only to be given a chance to produce change; to produce a better environment for work.
Your vote is crucial and I do not take you for granted. You truly count and I ask that we form a partnership to establish a better tomorrow. Let us work and win together. Thank you everyone and God keep you.
